Mervyn Laurence Peake (9 July 1911 – 17 November 1968) was a British writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. He is best known for what are usually referred to as the Gormenghast books, a series of four works that were part of a lengthy cycle left incomplete at his death. His surreal fiction, influenced by Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson, is sometimes compared to that of J. R. R. Tolkien.

Mervyn Peake was born of British parents in Kuling, on Mount Lu in Jiujiang, China, in 1911. His father was a medical missionary doctor, and his mother a missionary assistant. The family returned to England in 1922 via the Trans-Siberian Railway. Peake attended Eltham College and later the Royal Academy Schools, where he first painted in oils. Chinese influences have been noted in his works, particularly in the castle of Gormenghast.
